Shetland Tidal Array Monitoring

The Shetland Tidal Array is an operational tidal energy project in Bluemull Sound, harnessing tidal currents to generate clean, renewable electricity. Ecodetect supported Nova Innovation with on-demand analysis, providing the expertise and advanced technologies needed to monitor marine wildlife interactions and ensure safe, sustainable energy generation.

  • Ecodetect worked with Nova with monitoring technologies to study marine wildlife interactions with the Shetland Tidal Array.

    Impact
The monitoring revealed that 88% of video files contained no marine wildlife, and no collisions or near misses were observed between marine wildlife and turbines, indicating a very low risk of such interactions.

  • We implemented machine learning algorithms to automate the analysis of extensive subsea video data, enhancing the detection of marine wildlife interactions.

    Impact
This approach increased detection sensitivity, identifying previously overlooked events, such as small whitefish passing turbines in low light conditions, thereby improving the accuracy of collision risk assessments.

  • Ecodetect provided expertise in developing and deploying automated monitoring systems, including machine learning models, to study marine wildlife interactions with operational turbines.

    Impact
These innovations have set a benchmark for environmental monitoring in tidal energy projects, demonstrating how technology can enhance safety and sustainability in marine energy generation.

The Wild Oyster Project

The Wild Oyster Project in Conwy Bay, Wales, is dedicated to restoring native oyster populations to enhance marine biodiversity and improve water quality. In collaboration with Bangor University and Boatfolk, Ecodetect provided automated monitoring and analysis technologies to study oyster nurseries beneath marina pontoons and the surrounding marine ecosystem.

  • Ecodetect deployed advanced imaging systems at oyster nurseries to monitor oyster growth and environmental conditions continuously.

    Impact
This automated approach provided accurate, non-invasive data on oyster health and nursery conditions, reducing the need for manual inspections and enabling more efficient conservation management.

  • Machine learning algorithms were applied to analyse underwater footage, identifying fish, invertebrates, and other marine life interacting with the nurseries.

    Impact
The AI-driven analysis improved detection accuracy, revealing biodiversity patterns that inform habitat management and help ensure oyster restoration efforts support broader ecosystem health.

  • Ecodetect supplied and installed automated monitoring systems, including high-definition imaging equipment, to observe and record marine biodiversity within the oyster nurseries.

    Impact
These technologies enabled continuous, non-invasive monitoring of the nurseries, providing valuable data on the health and biodiversity of the marine ecosystem, thereby supporting the project's restoration goals.
